Advanced Human-Computer Interaction

Head: Daniele Puccinelli

The massive uptake of smartphones and the rise of ubiquitous connectivity have redefined the role of computing in our lives. At the same time, Human-Computer Interaction has also evolved to deliver systems that are user-friendly by design. The research area on Advanced Human-Computer Interaction focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of computer systems for people to interact with. Within this research area, ISIN focuses on the design of novel human-machine interfaces that can boost the user experience, and the application of Natural Language Processing to streamline human-computer interaction.

Specialty sectors:

  • Applied Natural Language Processing
  • Human-machine Interfaces

Applied Natural Language Processing

Contact person: Daniele Pucchinelli

In recent years, Natural Language Processing (NLP) has made a huge leap forward fueled by the involvement of large tech industry stakeholders. The practitioner community is benefiting greatly from the rapid rate of advancement of NLP research, and exciting opportunities for new applications are opening up. By staying abreast of the rapid evolution of NLP, we are able to propose and integrate cutting-edge solutions in a wide array of applications, whose common denominator is value extraction from text.

Expertise:

  • NLU, NLP and text analytics
  • Development of chatbots and other conversational agents
  • Applications of word embeddings
  • NLU and NLP support to studies in linguistics

Human-machine interfaces

Contact person: Mirko Gelsomini

In today's connected and fast-paced world, we are looking for products and services that work smoothly, save time and ultimately increase comfort, requiring more intuitive, natural and humanized interfaces. We find ourselves in a world in which our reality is overlaid, mixed and even extended with the digital sphere. These interfaces are a medium for expanding possibilities or even improving our own senses and abilities. These growing needs require new intelligent interfaces that move from the age of multi-purpose interactions to the age of personalized and adaptive experiences.

Expertise:

  • User experience, accessibility and usability
  • Development of advanced graphical user interfaces
  • Motion-based touchless interaction
  • Multisensory and multimodal environments
