Google acquires the AI company DeepMind

Image Google acquires the AI company DeepMind

DeepMind  was acquired by Google in January 2014 for about 500 million US dollars. Shane Legg, one of the founders of DeepMind, was an IDSIA PhD student in Prof. Schmidhuber's group (PDF). Daan Wierstra, the fourth member of DeepMind, also came from this group. So did other DeepMinders.

The Economist magazine published an article titled "Riders on a swarm" which describes how Ant Colony Optimisation is used in the real word. Thw work of IDSIA's reseachers Luca Maria Gambardella and Gianni Di Caro is mentioned.

Back in 1997, long before the recent successes, in Business Week's "X-Lab Survey" IDSIA was already ranked in fourth place in the category "Computer Science - Biologically Inspired", after much larger institutions. IDSIA was also ranked in the world's top 10 of the broader category "Artificial Intelligence."
